This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Facilities Management Service at the Wilmington Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Wilmington, North Carolina.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following occupations: painting, plastering, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning Preparing, painting, and refinishing interior and exterior buildings surfaces and other structures, furniture, equipment, and machinery Removing and installing floor and ceiling tile, stud walls, and gypsum wall board, windows, and doors Performing and completing work order assignments according to specifications Upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities Performing preventative maintenance inspections, repairing, and replacing fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain water and drainage systems Repairing flush valves, faucets, showers, vacuum breakers, or other parts in leaky valves, water closets, etc. Repairing and maintaining wooden structures, such as furniture, railings, shelves, doors, bulletin boards, etc. Repairing cabinet and locker doors, to include knobs, locks, tracks, etc. Installing ceiling tile and other parts of buildings using hand and power tools Inspecting and testing electrical lighting, power circuits and ballast transformers, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and appliances Renewing circuits either by isolation and cutting out defective wiring and replacing with new wiring or splicing ends of broken wires Dismantling electrical machinery with hand tools Replacing defective mechanical parts such as gears, bushings, and bearings, and related electrical parts, such as brushes, armatures, and assembling components Responsible for accountability of tools, materials, and test equipment ensuring they are not lost, stolen, or damaged due to negligence Must abide by prescribed safety codes, standards, and practices to prevent injury to self and others Work Schedule: Monday-Friday,8:00am-4:00pm Compressed/Flexible Schedule: Not authorized Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD078780 Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/31/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift heavy objects, carry, push or pull a variety of materials and equipment, such as fixtures, tools, ladders, and testing equipment. Duties involve climbing, pulling, kneeling, bending, and walking for prolonged periods of time. Working Conditions: At times, the Incumbent is required to work in areas that have poor lighting. They are required to work both inside and outside in all types of weather. The Incumbent works in areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease, dust, and/or steam. The Incumbent is required to work in areas that are noisy, such as pump rooms, service rooms, etc.; including areas that are exposed to gases, fumes, smoke. and dust. They work in all areas of the Medical Center, including contagious disease, and/or contaminated areas. Incumbent will be provided and required to wear universal protection items, such as caps, gowns, mask, full face, or any safety equipment.
