This position is located in the Healthcare Services Department, Armed Forces Retirement Home, Gulfport, MS. The incumbent functions as the clinical dietitian in charge of all medical areas. .

Duties

As a Dietitian, you will: Be responsible for the timely nutritional evaluation and for assessment of residents admitted to the medical areas, as well as developing and implementing nutritional screening on every resident of AFRH. Develop, implement, and monitor the nutritional care plan based on the physician's diet prescription and the dietitian's nutritional assessment of the patient. Be responsible for monthly documentation of nutritional findings in the medical records and care plans of each resident admitted to the medical areas, as well as planning and developing the goals, objectives, priorities, and standards for a geriatric population in the area of nutrition. Serve as Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Care Planning Team on a rotating basis with other health care professionals. Plan cycle therapeutic diet menus and analyze nutritional content of regular and modified diets. Conduct studies on resident satisfaction, food acceptance and preference, as well as investigative clinical studies as required on individual residents. Develop, plan and implement the required manuals and documentation to meet the dietary standards for Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: You must meet one of the following: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. OR; Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by American Dietetic Association (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. OR; Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for the GS-11: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience includes: Directs specialized activities of the food service management administrative function in food quality control, food safety/sanitation, and dietetic services. Examples: Conducting nutritional assessments including dietary history and laboratory test for each patient to accurately assess metabolic needs OR; Conducting nutritional education OR; Developing or modifying teaching materials OR; Ensuring provision of acceptable and nutritionally adequate meals for all residents with established budgetary and ration allowances. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 36 semester hours (54 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-11 you must have been at the GS-9 level for 52 weeks Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
