You will serve as a Machine Tool Operator in the Production Resources Department of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will perform common machine tool operations on one or more conventional machine tools such as engine lathes, turret lathes, milling machines, and drill presses. You will operate computer numerical control machines in the automatic mode utilizing the feeds and speeds programmed, making minor adjustments and compensations for tool and work-piece size difference, as well as tool changes. You will follow detailed instructions from the supervisor or higher grade workers that indicate the dimensions, machine to be used, machining sequence, proper feeds and speeds, and appropriate cutting tools for each operation. You will read and understand blueprints to determine the dimensional and surface finish requirements of a finished work-piece and to determine the sequence of operations in component disassembly and assembly. You will use measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, bore gauges, telescope gauges, vernier calipers, calipers, depth micrometers, vernier height gauges, thread micrometers or thread gauges to check and maintain the accuracy of dimensions. You will use a variety of hand tools and portable power tools such as reamers, taps, dies, wrenches, chisels, files, scrapers, punches, hammers, grinders, and drills. You will machine castings, forgings, or bar stock of various metals and metal alloys.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
  • This position requires the ability to lift/carry items weighing 60 pounds.
  • Work is performed in the shops and onboard ships and requires standing for long periods of time. It may require working in confined spaces that involve stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing.
  • This position requires visual acuity that involves identifying color coding of materials and the ability to read small scales/print.
