Surgical Service is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (Urology Clinic) to join the team!
Duties
Albuquerque is a gem of the Southwest that boasts relatively mild climate year-round, a vast array of outdoor activities including golfing, snow skiing, hiking, and bicycling. Albuquerque is home to largest hot air balloon event in the U.S., the annual Balloon Fiesta, due to its ideal climate and wind patterns. Albuquerque also boasts a growing film industry, art scene, and has many resorts and casinos to enjoy.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Sets up and plans in advance for any clinic or urgent care activity, anticipates needs of patients and providers, prepares patient for exams, obtains appropriate equipment and supplies without being reminded, obtains and records vital signs and required information to level appropriate for area of work.
Assists provider and/or nurse with diagnostic or treatment procedures including obtaining and setting up sterile equipment and wide variety of specialized equipment and by providing information and support to the patient. Ensures that appropriate statistical documentation of special procedures done in area is complete.
Assists in processing patients by directing patients and staff, securing reports and records. Sets priorities to facilitate patient care. Works and plans with others in area to coordinate and carry out activities specific to the area of assignment.
Provides basic and skilled nursing care in a variety of clinic settings. Modifies care to meet individual physical and emotional needs of patient. Documents in the electronic consolidated health record (CHR) significant subjective and objective data.
Makes skilled observations of patient's condition and recognizes those needing immediate care as opposed to the patient who may wait for scheduled appointment time. Takes appropriate actions in emergency situations and documents.
Prepares and administers safe administration of medications and vaccines in accordance with Medical Center and Surgical Service Policy/Procedures and monitors their side effects on the patient. Continues to keep updated on new medications. Recognizes unusual dosages or routes of administration as well as adverse reactions. Instructs patients and/or families regarding the proper and safe administration of medications and their indications and contra-indications.
Transcribes doctor's orders from the physician's orders sheet to the medication and/or treatment sheet and other appropriate forms. Orders must be co-signed by the professional nurse before being carried out. Provider assistance includes input of electronic labs, radiology and procedure requests.
Records nursing observations and those nursing care procedures which he/she performs and reports unusual findings.
Establishes effective interpersonal relationships with patients, families, Surgical Service staff and staff from other services.
Uses computer to retrieve selected patient information or to enter messages for purpose of communication.
Assists the physicians and/or nurse with therapeutic or diagnostic procedures. Obtains, assembles and arranges the necessary equipment. Correctly positions patients, provides information and reassurance.
Utilizes specialized equipment such as intravenous infusion pumps, doppler, feeding pump, 02 saturation, pulse oximetry, ekg.
Performs other related duties as indicated by the needs of the patient and the clinic area.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Education or Training: Must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant, or have you completed Health care education in the military service or training in the military service.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Experience: Completion of at least one year at the GS 5 level or equivalent of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS 5 LPN and be technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Completed work needs only a general review by a registered nurse (RN) or physician (MD/DO) for appropriateness and conformity with established policies/procedures.

Physical Requirements: Moderate Lifting (up to 44 lbs.); Light Carrying (under 15 lbs.); reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Walking (Up to 3 hours); Standing (Up to 3 hours); Kneeling (Up to 1 hour).
