About the Position: An Accounting Technician assigned to the Finance Center, Payments & Travel Division, Travel Payments Branch performs a variety of cost accounting oriented technical support through the analysis and evaluation of civil and military accounting data.
This is a developmental position. If selected at the GS-7, target level for this assignment is GS-8. The grade level selected will be based upon your qualifications and responses to the questionnaire.
Duties
Certify payments, maintain and control ledgers in order to control, record, and/or report status of funds.
Research current accounts, historical data, or source documents to develop and/or explain detailed information not otherwise readily available.
Reconcile detailed listings of outstanding transactions.
Receive, review, and/or process accounting such as transactions and requests for establishment of additional accounting records.
Respond to routine questions from customers and lower level technicians regarding accounting data, discrepancies, and procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position requires you to obtain and maintain a Financial Management Certification Level 1 within 24 months of entrance on duty date.

GS-07
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-6 level which includes performing work that involves experience in generally accepted accounting principles, methods and techniques; experience with cost and finance management principles, experience with automated financial management systems
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in field directly related to the work of the position, such as Accounting or related field of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-08
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level which includes performing work that involves experience in generally accepted accounting principles, methods and techniques; experience with cost and finance management principles, experience with automated financial management systems, and analyzing numerous accounts in multiple accounting systems.
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Accounting or related field of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06 for the GS-07, GS-07 for the GS-08).
Education
