This position serves as a Phlebotomist and is responsible for colleting a broad range of routine and emergency blood samples. In this position you may perform phlebotomy or testing on inpatients, outpatients, surgical patients, CBOC patients, ED patients or wherever the need arises.
Duties
Major Duties:
Responsible for proper patient identification, proper sample procurement, and proper specimen labeling following guidelines from The Joint Commission (TJC) and the College of American Pathologist (CAP) "Patient Safety Goals.
Performs phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of steps approved for sample collection.
Independently responsible for selecting the best venipuncture site, most suitable phlebotomy equipment (needle type, size, and length), most important cleansing agents(s), proper collection vials and assessing the patients condition before, during, and after the procedure.
Attends to the patients while in their care during the phlebotomy procedure.
Is attentive to patient needs, actions and complaints.
Follows guidelines for collecting times specimen at the appropriate times to ensure specimen viability.
Responsible for participation in method comparison to evaluate the use of new equipment and processes and compare them with those being used in terms of adherence to accreditation and safety requirements.
Makes recommendations to management for use of devices based on outcomes. Responsible for preparation of the collection sit and for drawing blood cultures without contamination.
Responsible for the sterile collection and dispersal of physician requested patient clean catch urinalysis specimens, urine cultures, and 24-hr urine collections.
Provide education to patients for proper collection techniques of urine, stool, or other fluid collections.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
Specialized Experience: You must have 6 months of general experience, and 6 months of specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Specialized experience includes: knowledge of approved venipuncture specimen collection techniques and laboratory test requirements, knowledge of processing and storage requirements and procedures for laboratory specimens, knowledge of patient identification methods, and knowledge and technical skill to perform patient testing and quality control procedures, verify the accuracy of results obtained and reporting results as required by policy. OR
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have possess 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation. Note: At grades GS-4 and above, a portion of the education is usually directly related to the work of the position to be filled. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond a high school diploma.(TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged/frequent standing, bending, walking, grasping, carrying, speaking, and wrist strain due to prolonged use of PC keywords. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such a dexterity (to perform intricate collection or specimen processing) and color vision.
