About the Position: Serves as the Horse and Rider Trainer for the Fort Sam Houston Caisson Section, Funeral Honors Platoon, Headquarters Support Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army North, located at Fort Sam Houston, TX.

Duties

Training horsemen and horses assigned to the Fort Sam Houston Caisson Section, Funeral Honors Platoon in accordance with established training modules and requirements. Creating training schedules and identifying the priority of horses for progression and eventual integration into the working operations of the caisson section. Provides input into the development and maintenance of training plans, Letters of Instruction (LOIs), and other efforts designed to increase the proficiency level of Caisson operations and horsemanship. Providing first aid treatment to horses and taking actions or responding to a variety of possibly unexpected volatile issues that relate to the training of horses.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • May be required to work other than normal workdays including weekends and holidays.
  • This position may require Travel away from duty station (TDY) of up to 5%. Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination to meet physical efforts requirements. A pre-employment physical examination and annual physical examination is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to frequently lifts, carries, loads and unloads items weighing at least 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Horse and Rider Trainer~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties such minor repairs to leather or saddles as necessary, assign horses for weekly rotations and limited duty restrictions in conjunction with veterinary personnel. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Horse training duties involve saddling horses for riding, conditioning of horses, response training of horses, ground control, lateral movement, components of stop; communication through the reins; the military seat; leg aids; horse psychology; postillion riding, harness driving, and ceremonial riding and military Full Honor Funerals. Work also includes providing first aid treatment to horses and taking actions or responding to a variety of possibly unexpected volatile issues that relate to the training of horses, and the execution of the unit mission within established guidelines. The work requires heavy physical effort to lift and carry feed, supplies, and equipment such as horse saddles. The work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, walking, running, riding, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Eye and hand coordination is required to ride horses and herd livestock. WORKING CONDITIONS: The trainer work is the paramount work for this position and takes place predominantly in an outdoor environment and mostly riding horses where the requirement is to instruct both riders and horses. When working outside, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and cold or foul weather conditions. The work may be performed under normal conditions or on uneven wet or muddy terrain, while on horseback and also at times in vehicles or on foot. When working with horses the trainer is also subject to being bitten, falls, cuts, bruises, being thrown from their mount and broken bones which can occur when working with or around livestock and under normal conditions or in rough terrain.
