About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
Assist in the planning and performing of experiments in a variety of laboratory settings.
Perform experimental procedures as needed to validate new procedures, set up laboratory and observatory areas for course instruction, and maintain and repair the associated equipment.
Procure required equipment, material, and supplies to support the Space Sciences laboratory program.
Assist performance of difficult and complex and space science experiments in support of the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering laboratory program using sophisticated and advanced laboratory instruments.
Provide technical assistance to staff, faculty, and cadets on laboratory equipment utilization and care.
Guide cadets in the generation, compiling, assembling, editing, and interpretation of experimental data from multiple sources.
Coordinate for borrowing of equipment from other departments or agencies.
Assist research efforts of faculty and cadets as required.
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and fabricate electronics and electrical equipment used in support of all department programs.
Make functional tests to determine the extent and location of malfunctions to isolate defective components.
Conduct performance tests of equipment and its components to ensure they are operational for lab instruction.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires occasional shift work to provide coverage on evenings or special situations in support of the department's mission.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with setting up or maintaining laboratory equipment or instruments; 2) Compiling or maintaining experimental data or records for an organization; and 3) Ensuring laboratory equipment or instruments are operational. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Geophysics, Geology, Mathematics, Physical Science, or another related field.
