Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) the Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse and the Licensed Vocational Nurse in the care of patients. The incumbent functions as NA, under close supervision and refers issues/questions to supervisors. The NA performs a variety of personal care or nursing care activities. The NA helps each patient attain optimal physical, physiological, emotional and social well-being.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant include but are not limited to the following:
-Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria as appropriate to the age of the patient served in their assigned area.
-Participates in the ongoing assessment for revisions to patient's plan of care. Recognizes and immediately reports changes in patients' condition to beside RN, Resource RN or Charge Nurse.
-Provides care and completes tasks based on prioritization of patient care needs and adherence to patient care policies and procedures, seeking guidance or assistance as needed.
-Functions in the role of 1:1 sitter for Suicide Ideation/Homicide Ideation (SI/HI) patients, confused / fall risk patients.
-Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), hygiene, skin integrity, meals and self-care while ensuring patient maintains as much independence as possible.
-Demonstrates ability to use "Safe Patient Handling" Equipment and techniques; able to transport, turn and move patients using proper equipment.
-Recognizes medical/behavioral changes and initiates appropriate intervention or makes appropriate notification to health care team.
-Assists with admissions, discharges, transfers and death procedures.
-Assists with transporting patients at time of discharge as well as transporting patients to procedures and between wards as appropriate based on patient monitoring and/or needs.
-Assists with inventory of patient belongings in an accurate and timely manner with admission /transfer or discharge of the patient.
-Willingly floats to other patient care areas providing patient care and performing procedures under the supervision of the assigned bedside RN, and/or TL/CN.
- Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pulling and /or similar activities carried out using safe patient handling techniques.
Work Schedule:1830-0700(Night-shift). Days will be determined by the needs of the facility. 6-12 hour shifts and 1-8 hr shift with rotating weekends and holidays.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
One year above high school with courses related to the [NA] occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year [ ] as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005
Preferred Experience:
2 years NA experience
Grade Determinations:
GS-3 Experience. Less than one year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience in another medical field, performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;
OR,
Education. Successful completion of high school diploma or a GED.
AND
Demonstrated KSAs:1.Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.2.Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3.Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. Education: One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant
GS-4: Experience. One year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience equivalent to the GS-3 , performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;
OR,
Education. Successful completion of high school diploma or a GED.
AND
Demonstrated KSAs:1. GS-5: Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs
OR,
Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree;
AND
Demonstrated KSAs1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-3-5.
