These positions are located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service Line at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Duties

These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-08. At the GS-06 and GS-07 grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-08. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds.
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs a variety of testing and examination procedures in the laboratory, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunohematology, urinalysis, toxicology, and microbiology;
Uses venipuncture or medical procedures, obtains samples of blood and other body fluids;
Ensures safe and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concern for the donor and for the quality of the specimen;
Uses standard aseptic procedures and safeguards;
Controls biohazard, contaminated or potentially dangerous specimens in accordance with accreditation agency requirements;
Prepares slide, smears, cultures, etc., of extremely delicate or otherwise volatile specimens, with critical concern for the quality of the specimen given the procedure to be used for test or examination;
Maintains and controls laboratory records in accordance with accreditation agency requirements;
Determines compliance with safety requirements, establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules;
Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation on timely intervals so to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures;
Obtains data and complies with the practices, procedures and techniques described in the quality assurance plan;
Conducts established in-service programs for peers, other services or groups;
Maintains technical currency through formal education, training and networking;
Ensures the adequacy of scientific knowledge applied in the performance of required tests; and,
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Multiple Shifts Available - to be discussed at time of interview.
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

For this Medical Technician, GS-6:
One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the Medical Technician position. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR-
Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. -OR-
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
For this Medical Technician, GS-7:
One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the Medical Technician position. This also includes experience collecting, categorizing, cataloging, storing and maintaining specimen integrity; and calibrating, standardizing and maintaining equipment and instruments. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR-
Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. -OR-
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level.
