The Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is seeking a Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Hemodialysis). This position will be located in Houston, TX.

Duties

The incumbent must have knowledge of the dialysis water quality treatment system and equipment needed for dialysis including knowledge pf common machine problems and repairs to such equipment. The incumbent must have knowledge of all the equipment and procedures. The incumbent must keep accurate log records of all machine maintenance and repairs; submit monthly water quality reports. Collects water and dialysate samples for quality testing; has thorough working knowledge of the American Association of medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. Stay abreast of AAMI changes and implements action that reflect these changes; follow up on 24 hours and 48 hours results of all colony and endotoxin counts and take appropriate action disinfection and re-culturing procedures. He/her must have knowledge of safety and infection control policies and procedures, of the medical center and participates in strategic projects for quality assurance and performance improvement. The incumbent must have the ability to direct the daily work activities of the medical instrument technicians. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring scheduled and unscheduled breaks by the technician team. The incumbent is responsible for developing work schedules for the dialysis technician team and for distributing such schedules to all appropriate personnel. The incumbent is responsible for setting up periodic maintenance programs for all equipment. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring the dialysis unit expendable supplies by suitable inventory methods. The incumbent is responsible for turning in monthly patient census reports. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ? 7403(f). Education : There are no specific educational requirements for this position. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 level. Licensure or certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-09: Medical Instrument Technician (Hemodialysis) Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques such as those provided for acutely ill patients and peritoneal dialysis in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures. *2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. *4. Ability to manage and supervise employees. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have SGNA core level one and two certifications (BLS and ACLS). Preferred Experience: Training on use of Dialysis Equipment Direct patient care as needed Administrative functions. The administrative aspects of the position include supervisory responsibilities over the dialysis medical instrument technicians. A high degree of integrity of the patients. Training of Nurses and technicians on the daily maintenance/safety checks of the dialysis machines. Knowledge and maintenance of the Water Quality and maintenance of the water quality logs. Ability to make rapid decision in the absence of physicians and or nurses regarding malfunctioning equipment and water assessment. Understanding of the functions and capabilities of all equipment in the dialysis program; the pathophysilogy of End State Renal Disease; the complications of dialytic modalities, and the correct functioning of all equipment in the hemodialysis unit Ability to correct malfunctioning equipment quickly and correctly Participate in all training programs of the dialysis unit and assist in all clinical research projects. Participates in the overall planning and operation fo the dialysis unit and keeps abreast of current and new dialytic techniques. Trains all new personnel assigned to the dialysis unit and insures their continues dialysis equipment and management thereof competency Participate in all Water Quality meetings as scheduled Complete All Annual Performance Appraisals for direct reports References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II Appendix G27, Medical Instrument TechnologistQualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion. This position requires potentially extended periods of continued walking (2-4 hours), standing (2-6 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, pulling (1-2 hours), and pushing (1-2 hours). lifting (50 pounds), carrying (50 pounds) and the ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must be able to work closely with others, as well as protracted or irregular hours of work. Must be compliance with the use of ergonomic exercises and employee safety requirements.
