This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The Registered Nurse is directly responsible to the designated Patient Care Coordination Nurse Manager. The registered nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care, and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse Veteran patient population. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Possess the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying patient and significant others. Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served in the assigned areas of practice. Cross trained to work all areas of Acute Care Service Line to include Inpatient Care Team, Emergency Department, and Intensive Care Unit. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging, and principles of growth, .and development, relevant to the adult and geriatric population. Function as Team Leader. Make daily assignments. Perform bedside non-OR procedures and documentation. Administer medications according to Bar Code Medicine Administration policy. Serve as mentor and/or preceptor and resource person to new and less experienced staff. Lead unit quality improvement data collection, monitoring, analyzing, reporting, and development of action plans to correct deficiencies. Identify areas of practice on the unit for improvement and develop unit monitors to include action plans to improve practice. Chair or co-chair hospital committees and work groups, as assigned. Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously, with all internal and external customers. Maintain confidentiality of electronic, written,. and/or verbal patient/ employee information. Demonstrate working practices that include adherence to infection control standards, and the use and operation of equipment. Functions as Charge Nurse when assigned to include: Completion of daily rounds with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), Facilitate bi-weekly IDT meetings, Complete nursing plans of care for all admissions to the Inpatient Unit, Completion of nursing assignments for all tours of duty ensuring all assignments are completed, Includes collection and interpretation of data to include action plans, Identify staff and patient learning deficits, Provide staff and patient education. All other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: One year of medical/surgical, preferably Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department experience. BLS/ACLS training, and annual training for performing activities that reflect the educational, experiential, and competency requirements outlined in the four dimensions: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration, Scientific Inquiry. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting, and repositioning patients or similar activities (up to 6 hours). Also, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, and both hands. The incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 35 pounds frequently. The incumbent must be able to transport and transfer patients (e.g., stretcher to wheelchair, bed to stretcher, wheelchair to bed, etc.) safely. The incumbent will be required to handle equipment, must be knowledgeable of and able to use safe lifting techniques and mechanical lifts. The use of correct body mechanics required. The incumbent should also have the ability to identify the potential for safety hazards. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing (aid permitted), speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading, and logical thinking. Also, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16". The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace, requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment and assignment changes. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials (2 hours at a time or longer).
