The position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in the Ambulatory Care Service located in Artesia, New Mexico.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The primary purpose of the Health Technician is to provide medical and administrative support assistance to the Patient Aligned Care Team, Ambulatory Care Service (ACS). MAJOR DUTIES: Operates guidelines to determine technical factors, sets controls, calibrates, and operates equipment and instruments such as electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, Capillary blood glucose (CBG) monitor, ankle brachial index (ABI) doppler, bladder scan, and vital signs monitor. Sets up and adjusts any required accessory equipment for the aforementioned equipment and instruments. Adjusts equipment placement for patient's comfort if needed. Utilizes knowledge base, general instructions and guidelines to perform a variety of routine and difficult diagnostic tests and procedures such as Capillary blood glucose (CBG), orthostatic blood pressure, oxygen saturation, visual acuity, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, ankle brachial index (ABI), Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT, bladder scan for post void residual and monofilament foot exams (diabetic patients), vital signs; documents aforementioned test results in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) Graphic User Interface (GUI). Notifies health care professional of any abnormal or unusual results. Cleans exam rooms and re-stocks supplies as indicated by the needs of the patient or health care professional. Orders and maintains all supplies utilized in the clinic. Observes patient during procedures and identifies changes in patient condition; monitors patient for adverse reactions and takes corrective action based on established policy and knowledge base. Performs any prerequisite tests on patients prior to procedures and notifies health care professional of any abnormal results. Provides training to new clinic staff regarding equipment or instruments used. Provides assistance of a technical, specialized or support nature to health care professionals in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Supports health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Performs other duties assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications

GS-6: Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience to perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been gained at least the equivalent of the next lower grade level of (GS-5) in Federal service. Specialized experience is taking vital signs and treatments, findings and progress in the patient record; using medical equipment and performing electrocardiogram, suction, phlebotomy, and ancillary testing such as: capillary blood glucose and cardiac enzymes etc. following universal precautions and sterilization techniques and Centers for Disease Control guidelines in cleaning equipment's. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~ GS-6: Possess at least six (6) months of graduate education or an internship in a field of study that is directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ GS-6: Possess an equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience as described above to meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~AND~ English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Physical Requirements: The work requires frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, stretching, pushing, turning and at times lifting heavy equipment and/or patients. Good vision and hearing are required to collect patient data. The work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomfort which require special safety precautions.
