The Master Preceptor, Acute Surgical works collaboratively and effectively with diverse teams to promote organizational and individual learning outcomes. Executes delivery through integrated programs that cross service/discipline lines to promote successes within the organization. Functions as an educator and consultant utilizing adult learning models and education theory in collaboration with other service lines, disciplines, and affiliates.

Duties

Utilize nursing process to manage, prioritize, and organize educational needs for Acute Surgical staff. Responsible and accountable for gap analysis of Acute Surgical staff in conjunction with Acute Surgical leadership. Master Preceptor will create and maintain didactic and simulation curriculum and provide regular classroom instruction in conjunction with simulation training. Able to provide patient care as outlined by the staff nurse job description for the unit. Serve as Preceptor and Mentor for new staff, nursing residents and students assigned to the unit. Serve as Mentor and role model for nursing preceptor staff on the unit. Including conducting regular check-ins with nursing staff actively completing nursing preceptor training. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement didactic and simulation training for the nursing unit. Consult with individual clinical groups to facilitate continuing education activities to improve the delivery of care. Assist stakeholders by utilizing clinical expertise to assist in identifying and securing appropriate and available resources to address nursing educational needs within the Nursing Unit. Utilize the nursing process to identify creative strategies to increase efficiency for assigned units, teams or workgroups related to Acute Surgical overall strategic goals. Demonstrate leadership and initiative to support all clinical services through the development and implementation of education programs focused on health information systems such as the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) programs, Essentris, and others as apply within the Acute Surgical. Evaluate the need for new technology and plans for future resources in conjunction with Acute Surgical Leadership and/or Chief of Nursing Education. Collect data for and assist in the preparation of reports as required and/or requested by VASLCHCS Administration, and Central Office: Serves and Simulation Faculty for the Nursing Education Department. Will develop and provide interprofessional simulation training for the Acute Surgical to support staff professional development, annual mandatory education, and competency training. Support the Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) [if required for nursing unit] classes as trained instructor. Responsible to coordinate with Nursing Education staff the use of simulation resources (i.e., manikins, simulation lab etc.) Ensure appropriate use of simulation and education resources. Participate in maintenance of education equipment and simulation/classroom spaces. Serve as Faculty for the Nurse Residency programs and Student Nurse programs. Serve in key roles on committees, councils, and teams utilizing expert clinical knowledge, with an emphasis on nursing education. Promote a positive image of VA nursing within the medical center and in the community. Ensure expert knowledge and comprehensive understanding of policies and procedures as it relates to the nursing education. Use the group process to identify, anticipate, evaluate, and resolve nursing staff educational needs within the Acute Surgical. Maintain effective relationships with colleges and clinical instructors/clinical rotations who have students receiving clinical education within the Acute Surgical. Demonstrates operating knowledge of A/V equipment and arrangement of classroom to accommodate learner and presenter needs. Actively participate in committee and task force activities as assigned. Provide career guidance to Nursing staff including advice to staff on application requirements for scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Masters Degree in Nursing, 5 years RN Clinical experience, Simulation Education experience and Nursing Education experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. Requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective care. Requires the individual to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with the neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients. Requires the individual to travel in an automobile for several hours at a time.
