This position is located at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The mission of is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. Duties

The duties include but not limited to: Leads a team of Police Officers and other administrative staff. Directs day-to-day lead policing operations and non-leading policing assignments. Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out PS's overall mission where most of the work is performed on Departmental property. This includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed when consistent with Federal law, regulation, VA policy, and operational guidance. Assigns, distributes, reviews, approves, and disapproves employees' assignments. Monitors and reviews the status and progress of the work and makes workload adjustments to ensure the workload is balanced. Ensures work assignments are distributed and performed promptly by employees. Reviews police reports, patrol reports, and ongoing investigations to ensure complete, concise, and factual-information reporting. Makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Reviews and recommends standard operating procedures or changes to current standard operating procedures. Provides on the job training and acts as a field training officer to new employees. Answers questions of other employees on procedures, polices, directives, etc. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that come up. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to ensure that supervisor's instructions and deadlines have been met. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards. Provides input on performance rating and any disciplinary actions (to include removal) of PS employees. Informs employees of available services and employee activities. Leads on investigations and personally conducts investigations, apprehensions, or detention of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the US. Conducts investigations with a nexus to VA, prisoner transport, patient search and recovery, life-saving efforts, disaster response and recovery, asset protection during transit, training, and other matters. Provides patrol in vehicles, by foot and/or on a bicycle. Detects and intervenes in criminal activity. Responds to calls for police assistance, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances. Investigates incidents and takes steps to mitigate further risk and resolve situations. Provides emergency response coordination as needed. Performs drug and contraband intervention techniques and provides training to those areas where contraband identification and knowledge are imperative for the staff. Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress and responsible to make independent decision and take/coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property. The independent decision could be lifesaving and made without supervision. All other duties as assigned and outlined within position description. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-08 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Leading and directing employees in their duties in response to potential threats of violence, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; enforcing federal, state, and local laws; making arrests; conducting foot and vehicle patrol; maintaining control of a scene or incident; taking statements from witnesses/suspects and advising them of their rights; preparing detailed reports of criminal offenses, violations, incidents, and citations issued; interrogating suspects; and applying all correct rules of search and seizure. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.
