This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

The LPN is expected to exercise independent technical judgment. The LPN GS7 is directly responsible to the Registered Nurse for carrying out identified responsibilities within the scope of their education and employment. The nurse manager/supervisor retains administrative responsibility for supervision and performance evaluation. The Licensed Practical Nurse engages in nursing care which requires the knowledge and Skills of an individual licensed as an LPN/LVN. The Licensed Practical Nurse at the GS7 level maintains an elevated level of practice under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The LPN is responsible for the quality of care delivered and their personal and professional behavior. The Licensed Practical Nurse, GS-7, GEC&RS position, has met the standards for this position as outlined in the Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse Qualification Standard, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Handbook 5005, Part Il, Appendix G13. The employee will possess the knowledge and skills necessary for demonstrating consistently independent clinical judgment, possessing a thorough working knowledge of complex practices and procedures. The LPN GS 7 is a member of the interdisciplinary team caring for Veterans. The employee completes assigned duties and responsibilities which involve practical nursing activities at the GS-6 level. In addition, they are involved to a greater degree in the development and modification of the interdisciplinary plan of care, as evidenced. The LPN GS7 meets all the requirements for LPN GS6; and performs a wide range of patient care and supportive duties. The LPN works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), and/or MD/DO, PA/NP in ensuring care to veterans receiving care in the following GEC&R areas: ALS clinic, Rehab Medicine, Interventional Pain, Geriatric Primary Care, & Geriatric Specialty Clinics (Falls, Memory Clinic, and Palliative Medicine) and Home Based Primary Care (HBPC). The LPN GS7 is a complex LPN position. The LPN GS 7 demonstrates the knowledge and ability to-provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. The LPN GS7 will possess the knowledge and skills necessary for concentrated effort and direction in carrying out the most complex practical nursing assignments, including assignments for selected veterans requiring interventional pain specialty care. The staff mix is such that employees at this grade level are expected to perform licensed practical nursing duties of considerable difficulty and responsibility under very general supervision. Competency will be validated during the orientation period, and annually thereafter. The GEC&R LPN 7 is a member of the Interdisciplinary Teams (IDT) in these areas and aids the physician, nurse manager, registered nurse, and other team members before, during, & after diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures. The work is performed in the GEC&R clinical areas previously mentioned. The LPN 7 participates with the IDT in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the physician, nurse manager, registered nurse, and or/or designated member of the team. Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. License: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. An LPN/LVN who has or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16 of this part. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge and skills necessary to care out more specialized patient care duties, including assignments in more complex inpatient and/or outpatient care settings. Ability to assist RN and/or MD/DO to appropriately prioritize overall patient care needs and adjust plans for care delivery making astute observations of subtle, less obvious changes (both physical and emotional) in patient's conditions and taking the appropriate action. Ability to proactively assist the RN or MD/OD in addressing patient's needs for medication/treatments, accurately administering prescribed medications/treatments and appropriately recording patient's response to medications/treatments received. Knowledge and skill to promptly recognize potential urgent or emergent patient care situations. Assists individuals or groups of patients and their families to take an active role in promoting health lifestyles for more positive outcomes. Exercises skill in influencing and communicating with unusually difficult to care for or communicate with patients and/or family members who may exhibit problems with lack of self-control, resistant or abusive behaviors, or impediments in their ability to understand or follow instructions. Skill, creativity, and initiative in contributing to the improvement of overall care delivery and patient and/or family satisfaction levels. Comprehensive practical nursing knowledge and skills in specialized procedures and practices to serve as a resource person for other staff in organizing and implementing more complex/specialized patient care. Ability to support the RN or MD/DO in monitoring the practice of unlicensed nursing or non-medical staff in patient care delivery.
