As a member of the Thermal Engineering Group, you will be responsible for working independently and in multi-disciplinary teams to conduct design, analysis, and testing to determine the thermal response and performance of aerospace vehicles and components. You will be expected to document and present your methods, results, and recommendations to peers, project teams and stakeholders, and/or in conference publications. You will also contribute to the Thermal Group's knowledge sharing efforts.

Duties

Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Conducts multi-dimensional steady-state and transient analysis of passive and active thermal systems on aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, or launch vehicles, including overall systems or individual components to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Understands, visualizes, models, analyzes, designs, tests, and operates thermal related aspects of aerospace vehicles, payloads, and/or subsystems operating within, above, and beyond the earth's atmosphere and in other planetary environments. Works toward thermal-related design improvements which incorporate new technologies, improve reliability and performance, extend the life of aerospace vehicles and/or payloads, and/or reduce total development costs. Works with multi-disciplinary project teams to design, develop, build, test, and operate aerospace payloads. Effectively communicates with branch members, project team members, and stakeholders in oral and written formats. Documents work, including methods and results, in a variety of formats including formal written reports, chart presentations, and/or email communications. Develops and executes thermal test plans and procedures. Serves as an active member of the thermal discipline group including contributing to knowledge sharing efforts and participating in group meetings and peer reviews.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-11, you must have: a) You must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal sector: Working in the areas of heat transfer, thermal capabilities, or thermal analysis for aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, launch vehicles, electronic systems, or large structures; Using commercial thermal analysis codes (e.g. Thermal Desktop, COMSOL, COMET, or equivalent) or supporting programming activities to assist with determining thermal capabilities using Python, Matlab, Excel, Visual Basic, or similar programming languages; AND Assisting with preparing work products using reports, trade studies, presentations, technical papers, design guides, or laboratory notebooks that explain results. OR b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field OR c) Completed 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field OR d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal sector: Supporting thermal engineering activities for determining heat transfer, thermal capabilities, or performing thermal analyses for aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, launch vehicles, electronic systems, or large structures; Applying commercial thermal analysis codes (e.g. Thermal Desktop, COMSOL, COMET, or equivalent) or performing programming for determining thermal capabilities using Python, Matlab, Excel, Visual Basic, or similar programming languages; AND Preparing work products using reports, trade studies, presentations, technical papers, design guides, or laboratory notebooks that explain results or ensure project requirements are met. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal sector: Determining or developing thermal capabilities, conducting thermal analyses, or performing assessments related to aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, launch vehicles, electronic systems, or large structures; Applying commercial thermal analysis codes (e.g. Thermal Desktop, COMSOL, COMET, or equivalent) and performing programming for determining thermal capabilities using Python, Matlab, Excel, Visual Basic, or similar programming languages; AND Creating or presenting work products using reports, trade studies, presentations, technical papers, design guides, or laboratory notebooks to explain results and/or ensure project requirements are met. Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of graduate education only (GS-11 only): Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astrophysics, Electrical Engineering (except power), Electronics Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics. Other appropriate physical or computer science, mathematics or engineering fields are qualifying if the major includes or is supplemented by at least 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) of appropriate physical science or engineering courses including nine semester hours (or the equivalent) of physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or gas dynamics.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
