The Medical Technician will be assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS), VA Medical Center, WPB, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, West Palm, FL. The Medical Technician is responsible for independently performing a variety of laboratory procedures and examinations within various disciplines of the clinical laboratory.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Serves as a "floater" within the Pathology & Laboratory Service, performing analytical testing procedures as directed within the Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, and Microbiology sections of the service. Analytical testing procedures are performed utilizing a variety of waived testing methods in multiple laboratory sections. Tests methodologies employed by the incumbent within the discipline of Chemistry include, but are limited to, glucose, bun, creatinine, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and lactic acid. Performs procedures within the discipline of Microbiology include, but are not limited to, chemical urinalysis and occult blood. Performs procedures within the discipline of Hematology include, but are not limited to, hemoglobin analysis; coagulation studies (i.e., Prothrombin Time, Partial Thromboplastin Time, Thrombin Time). Acts as liaison between the laboratory and the patient care areas regarding such matters as test requests, integrity of specimens received, disposition of orders for uncollected specimens, cancellation or re-ordering of work not collected, follow-up of orders for recollection or collection by ward personnel, status of requests ordering assistance, interim reports, test availability. Refers questions to appropriate technical supervisory personnel when necessary. Orders and maintains adequate supplies for the phlebotomy areas of the laboratory service; including phlebotomy trays used to draw patient samples in other areas of the Medical Facility. Assists in the overall support of the laboratory by performing additional duties such as glassware cleaning, supply stocking, and other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. And Specialized Experience GS-7: must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position. OR Substitution of Education for Experience: Successful completion of one (1) year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation (Transcript Required) OR Combination of Education and Experience: must have equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate level education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion with considerable walking and standing.
