This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

PERIODONTIST DENTIST
As a Periodontist, he/she is licensed and privileged to perform the duties of a general dentist with the following additional duties:
a. Comprehensive periodontal examination, consultation, and treatment planning
b. Complete occlusal adjustment
c. Osseous grafts and respective surgery
d. Soft tissue and autogenous palatal and connective tissue grafts
e. Root respective procedures
f. Tooth extraction/including impactions associated with periodontal surgery
g. Vestibuloplasty, Frenectomy
h. Surgical tooth exposure, Surgical perforation repair
i. Nonsurgical management of temporomandibular disorders
j. Alveoplasty
k. Surgical removal of dentoalveolar osseous lesions
l. Removal of exostoses
m. Ridge augmentation and contouring (Hard and soft tissue)
n. Intentional tooth replantation or transplantation
o. Surgical placement and maintenance (including removal and reinsertion) of osseointegrated dental implants
p. Guided tissue (including bone) regeneration procedures (GTR, GBR)
q. Minor tooth movement (fixed appliances)
r. Sinus augmentation procedures in conjunction with dental implant placement
s. Surgical root canal therapy including root-end resection and filling
t. Nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia
u. Moderate sedations
The extent and complexity of each of the above privileges granted to a Periodontist is dependent on the experience and documented training of the particular individual which is established through credentialing and privileging The Periodontist must be familiar with VHA Handbook 1130.1, Dental Program Procedures for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Medical Facilities.
He/she must become familiar with and adhere to Dental Service and Medical Center policies and procedures. The individual must develop mastery of the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and must complete all records within the time periods prescribed by medical center policy.
Functional Statement: Periodontist The Periodontist must demonstrate satisfactory clinical judgement and skill in the performance of patient care in accordance with the Dental Service Standards of Care Manual.
He/she will consult with available specialists when confronted with a procedure more advanced than routine dental treatment or experience. The Periodontist one in which he/s he may lack must adhere to the complexity of procedures as outlined in his/her list of privileges and will not exceed the intent of the privileges without the proper specialty supervision. The provider is expected to acknowledge patients and staff with compassion and respect. Each Dentist will maintain current, active licensure in at least one state or the District of Columbia, and will report any change or renewal to the Chief, Dental Service. He/she must complete VA required annual employee education and will participate in continuing professional education and submit documentation of completed activities to the Chief, Dental Service.

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients.
~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
