The primary responsibility of the MIT-Telemetry Technician is to spot, identify, notify, and document arrhythmia and change of rhythms of up to 56 patients on the Central Telemetry Monitoring System. They must be familiar with all arrhythmias on the Critical Care Value's list, be able to identify them in a real-time setting and make value judgments on the difference between real arrhythmia and artifact.
Duties
The Telemetry/EKG technician GS-649-7 must possess strong basic arrhythmia skills with a working knowledge of advanced arrhythmia, including a thorough knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology. They must have the ability to determine when a computer-generated algorithm is incorrect. They must have the ability to determine proper rhythm, rate and measurements required to properly interpret an EKG rhythm.
A. The technologist must have and maintain a current CPR certification
B. The technologist must have a complete understanding of the telemetry monitoring system, the transmitter, the 12-lead EKG machine, the Holter monitor and the 30-day event monitor and the stress testing equipment
C. The technologist must demonstrate basic and advanced arrhythmia skills to make quick, accurate decisions based on EKG data and notify appropriate nursing or supervisory personnel of EKG changes in the patients monitored or those having an EKG
D. The technologist must have a working knowledge of the Medical Center's Infection Control policies and procedures because their position required direct patient contact
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English
GS-7 Requirements
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Proper performance of 12-lead electrocardiograms using approved techniques. 2.. The ability to interpret 12-lead rhythms to determine if the computer-generated algorithm is correct 3. On an in-patient, take responsibility of notifying the appropriate health care provider for any life-threatening rhythms/arrhythmia documented on the EKG. For out-patients, take responsibility of notifying the proper authority about life-threatening rhythms/arrhythmias. These include the Supervisor of MITs, a Cardiologist, or the Nurse Manager of Cardiology. 4. Have the ability to check patients out in CPRS/Vista after a test has been completed 5. Have the ability to hook-up Holter monitors and 30-day Event monitors and to disconnect them 6. Take responsibility for noting when equipment is broken or malfunctioning and notify the appropriate people so the equipment can be repaired

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.
Physical Requirements: When performing telemetry, the work requires long periods of sitting and is a sedentary position. However, when patients are admitted, the telemetry technician may be required to walk a short distance to hook-up the patient. When performing 12-lead EKG's the work requires long periods of standing and moving from floor to floor
