This position serves independently as a journeyman electrician of Engineering Service, for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System located within the Maintenance and Operations Section. Installs, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots, loads and tests new and existing electrical lines, circuits, lighting and power systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment. Incumbent will assist in switching, racking in and removing 35kv breakers, and troubleshooting of 35kv gear.

Duties

Knowledge of the operation, installation and repair of a variety of complex electrical systems and equipment, such as series, parallel and compound circuits for single and multiple phase current of varying voltage up to 35KV, amperage and frequency, and wiring systems in institutional buildings and power regulating and control circuits and distribution to equipment and machinery. Interpret and apply the National Electric Code, local codes, Federal regulations, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics and drawings, and to use trade mathematical formulas to calculate common properties, such as, voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow. Plan and layout the routing, placement and arrangement of complex systems, circuits, controls & equipment. Skill in use of hand tools and power tools common to the trade, such as conduit and pipe benders, hydraulic benders and pipe threading machines and a wide variety of test equipment, such as multi meters, mergers, frequency meters, watt meters, circuit breaker tests, etc. Locate, diagnose and repair trouble occurring in lighting systems, rheostats, thermostats, heating equipment, shop and hospital equipment, using tools and meters common to the trade. Maintenance and repair of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and power conditioner circuitry for Imaging, Laboratory, and IRM equipment. This equipment will be maintained to the component level, with repairs being made to circuit board components. Determine what level of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for the task and if any or what type of Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) is required. Work from building plans, blueprints, wiring, diagrams, schematics, drawings and maintenance and repair manuals to plan and layout the routing, placement, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determine arrangement, placement and routing of distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections and installs conduit, fittings, wiring, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices. Conduct, on a rotating basis, monthly test and transfer of the emergency backup generator systems. Estimate materials, tools, equipment and time needed to accomplish each assignment. Measure, cut, bend and install conduit, boxes and wiring, using all tools common to the trade. Install junction, switch and outlet boxes, including pulling, splicing, and connecting wire, and tests all circuits for continuity and safety, using test instruments common to the trade. Perform the initial troubleshooting on the uninterrupted power systems (UPS), determining if it's an electrical or equipment problem. Perform the scheduled Preventative Maintenance on electrical systems and equipment. Open and close work orders, accounting for work hours, materials cost, and work accomplishments. Assist other crafts and trades in diagnosing and repairing electrical problems in the Hospitals systems and equipment. Installing and replacing motors, switches, controls, etc., when the job is beyond other shops capabilities. Install boxes, fittings and conduit for communications systems, alarms system, etc. May perform other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, motorized high-lift, as well as other hard to reach places. Stands, stoops, bend, kneel, crawls, climbs and may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries tools, parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds and less often up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves, with assistance, heavy objects weighing more than 45 pounds. Lifting equipment is available. Work is performed both inside and outside, in any weather (hot/cool/wet). Work may be performed in cramped, poorly illuminated, warm & humid interstitial and pipe spaces. Work may be performed in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. May work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Works from motorized high lift or building roof to install, repair or replace exterior lighting. May utilize catwalks and I-beams in interstitial spaces to access work. Exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, bums and rotary devices such as motors. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
