Duties
Prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex analysis of botanical and plant responses as the relate to land and water resource projects.
Complete botanical surveys and clearances to assist with the processing of permit applications to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law.
Implement the habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office.
Monitors and surveys sensitive species and their habitats. Document, evaluate, and report changes in habitat status.
Utilize GIS and GPS technology to complete plant surveys, identify impacts to Threatened and Endangered Species, and evaluate inventory and monitoring data to determine plant population trends and impacts.
Serves on an interdisciplinary team to address botanical and natural resources issues and problems.
Collaborate with supervisor and other specialists to write and review botanical input for environmental assessments, biological assessments, protective stipulations, and resource management plans.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Assisting in the evaluation and monitoring of the threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs. Locating, surveying, identifying, and recording threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements. Collecting and summarizing data and administering plant species projects.

Education: Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
To qualify for the GS-11 grade level, In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Developing and managing a botany program of work which included both invasive and native plants. Leading a program of work that involves seasonal crews, contractors, and partnerships. Providing the documentation and coordination necessary for effective management of Threatened, Endangered, Sensitive (TES) and invasive botany species across the assigned landscape. Conducting field survey work that includes vascular and non-vascular plant species.

Education: Three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. Physical Demands: Field work involves walking distances of 1-8 miles in a day over rough mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, and lifting or carrying objects exceeding 50 pounds.
Work Environment: Field work involves exposure to extreme weather conditions including high winds, dust, extreme temperatures, wildfires, poisonous plants and animals, and other risks and discomforts. You may also drive off-road vehicles over rough mountainous terrain, fly in small aircraft, camp overnight, etc.
Education
This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, or courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education: Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.
