The office is soliciting applications for a Financial Litigation Technician position within the Civil Division of the Northern District of Indiana. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of legal support functions to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana. Typical work assignments will include: Obtains and analyzes financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay. Initiates contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations, their ability to pay, and negotiates written payment schedules to assure successful collection of debts. Conducts skip-tracing activity when necessary to locate debtors, using own discretion in determining those techniques and any follow up needed to locate the debtor. Reviews and reconciles computerized debt collection printouts with office collection records. Makes determinations as to the appropriateness and cost effectiveness of pursuing the obligation either by suit or proceedings subsequent to the entry of judgment to enforce collection. Interprets and enforces judgments in criminal cases, and independently performs all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases. Communicates with debtors to present options for debt payments, answer questions, explain pertinent procedures, clarify information and work cases to resolution. This position has promotion potential to the GS-07 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the experience/education requirements for at least one of the grade levels as described below: GS-05 Grade Level Qualification Requirements To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level; or four years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing routine debt identification and collection support. Examples of specialized experience may include the following: using automated systems to initiate documents for debt collection actions, track debtor accounts, communicating with debtors to present options for debt payments, and producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. -OR- Education: Completion of at least four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. -OR- Combining experience and education: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this position. Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-04 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hour) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. GS-06 Grade Level Qualification Requirements To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must meet the following conditions as defined below: Specialized Experience:At least one full year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing routine debt identification and collection support. Examples of specialized experience include: using automated systems to conduct routine research, initiate documents for debt collection actions, track debtor accounts, communicating with debtors to present options for debt payments, and producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. GS-07 Grade Level Qualification Requirements To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet the following conditions as defined below: Specialized Experience:At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as serving as a technician in the processes and procedures related to asset identification and debt collection activities. Examples of specialized experience include: using common online resources to obtain and analyze routine financial information regarding debtors; reviewing and verifying debtors account status and payment transactions; entering and tracking financial data in automated systems and spreadsheets; drafting and/or preparing standardized letters, forms, and reports; preparing routine documentation required to take legal actions; and performing basic computations and approving acceptable payment amounts. Typing Proficiency Requirement: To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
