Selected applicant will be required to live at the John Jarvie Historic Ranch in government provided housing which will be rented at the going quarters rate as assessed annually. We expect to fill one vacancy at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

Duties

This position serves as the John Jarvie Historic Ranch Park Ranger for the Green River District; the duty station is located at the remote John Jarvie Historic site. Advises visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities. Meets with visitors to provide information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, site use opportunities and limitations, and Vernal Field Office (VFO) recreation opportunities. Monitors components of the Special Recreation Permits (SRPs) program; including compliance checks of permitted individuals and companies, and reports violations to Law Enforcement, supervisor, and other pertinent Recreation staff. Develops interpretive programs specific to Jarvie Ranch and Brown Park, conducting independent research of topics using sources such as records, books, and files. Responds to emergency calls or operations and takes action necessary to preserve the peace, resolve problems, protect visitors and resources, give emergency aid and other appropriate assistance, and obtain and protect evidence. When applicable inspects for proper river operations and permit stipulation for outfitters permitted to operate on sections B and C of the Green River. Regularly facilitates on-the-ground tours of the John Jarvie Historic Ranch when visitors visit the site. Performs and assists with grounds maintenance of the historic site to include landscaping, gardening, weeds removal, and brush cutting. Completes regular maintenance including cleaning facilities of two adjacent campgrounds and contacts visitors for fee payment compliance.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Applicant will be required to wear a standard uniform Class B or C as appropriate, while performing patrol and public contact duties. Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a valid, state driver's license. Applicant will be required to live at the John Jarvie Historic Ranch in government provided housing which will be rented at the going quarters rate as assessed annually. In addition to the Selective Placement Factors above, to qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include being a park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park; recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; interpretation skills, the ability to effectively provide accurate and interesting information to members of the public in order to convey information appropriate for and tailored to various audiences; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; and using computer systems to retrieve input, manipulate data, write and run reports. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 18 semester hours of graduate education in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualifications requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching, and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
