Qualifications
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as conducting research (i.e., formulating hypotheses, developing research plans, adapting existing methods/techniques) in emissions from wood burning appliance emissions or other combustion scenarios in real-world conditions; and analyzing and communicating research results;
- OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the academic discipline as described below;
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as conducting independent research in wood burning appliance emissions or other combustion scenarios in real-world conditions; managing technical progress of contracted research in the wood burning appliances or communicating research results in peer-reviewed publications.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of measuring combustion emissions from wood heating appliances or other biomass combustion scenarios; 2) Knowledge of air sampling and analysis of speciated organic and inorganic emissions in the gas and particle phases from combustion systems; 3) Skill in managing large scientific data sets, performing advanced statistical analysis, applying data visualization, and interpreting results; 4) Skill in written communication; 5) Skill in oral communication; 6) Ability to lead and train a team of researchers; 7) Skill in developing plans and program initiatives to support establishment of new scientific standards; 8) Ability to manage contracts including preparing procurement requests and monitoring technical performance.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
