The incumbent performs the duties of a Medical Technician in the clinical laboratory of the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center located in Indianapolis, IN. The principal responsibility of this position is receiving and processing specimens including computerized accessioning, centrifugation, aliquoting, determining specimen acceptability, and delivery to the point of analysis or, if analysis is to be delayed, ensuring proper storage conditions are utilized to preserve specimen integrity.
Duties

Duties include but may not be limited to:
Receives specimens into the laboratory area following all applicable policies and procedures.
Verifies patient identification and specimen labeling prior to acceptance into the laboratory.
Operates all equipment including, but not limited to automation line, centrifuges, pneumatic tube system, dumbwaiter as designed and according to all applicable policies and procedures.
Performs maintenance on laboratory instrumentation routinely as assigned and according to all applicable policies, procedures, and manufacturers' guidelines.
Participates and facilitates coordination and problem resolution.
Performs administrative tasks to support workflow of the EHRM team and laboratory staff.
Provides information, guidance, and technical advice on test ordering, specimen collection and submission to clinical staff.
Processes samples as required for reference laboratory testing.
Prepares shipping manifest as required for reference laboratory testing.
Work Schedule: Full-time; Monday - Friday; 12:00pm - 8:30pm; Rotating weekends and holidays

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 4) in Federal Service that includes performing the following duties: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of this position.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurrent standing to perform specimen processing as well as walking between different areas within the laboratory. The work involves utilizing a computer, visual acuity, and manual dexterity and the use of both hands. Requires intermittent moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; intermittent but possibly prolonged stooping and kneeling; ability to read and comprehend ordinary type and computer screens; ability to hear (aid permitted) and work in an environment with constant noise; working closely with others; high cognitive function required to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities without loss of accuracy; emotional stability required to maintain self-control in difficult and stressful situations.
