The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Team Leader Mammography is fully functional as an Advanced DRT and is able to carry out the assigned tasks independently.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: The incumbent will have significant administrative duties, including the performance and documentation of QC required to maintain compliance with all QC and QA requirements as per VHA policy, FDA/MQSA regulations, and ACR standards in mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound interventional procedures, stereotactic biopsy, and breast MRI. The incumbent is responsible for organizing and managing a comprehensive QA/QC program within the breast imaging section and representing the department at annual FDA/MQSA inspections. The incumbent works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum QC, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction. The incumbent keeps abreast of current technical literature, ACR and FDA guidelines and learns of new developments in mammography. The incumbent ensures all personal certifications and qualifications are continuously monitored and kept up to date as required by the accrediting bodies. This includes personal qualifications, continuing experience, and educational experience required by MSQA for all the breast imaging physicians, technologists, and medical physicists. The incumbent tracks and coordinates annual and semiannual equipment inspections and preventative maintenance with Biomedical Engineering, and reviews and acts upon their recommendations. The incumbent at this grade level is qualified to provide services in mammography, including performing very difficult and highly specialized radiographic examinations of the breast mammography utilizing a variety of specialized procedures that require precise positioning producing quality results. The incumbent sets up the exam room, assuring enough sterile supplies, and assures all needed equipment is present and in working order. The incumbent provides quality patient care when receiving, explaining the procedure, and positioning the patients. The incumbent sets the correct technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment, sets the required exposure for the requested procedure, secures the confidence and cooperation of the patient during the examination procedures, and recognizes exceptional diagnostic challenges. The incumbent tailors the exam to meet challenges and notifies the radiologist of significant findings that require immediate attention. Incumbent uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda, and transmitting and receiving e-mail through Microsoft Outlook. Will also use the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System, mammography tracking software, and the hospital PACS Systems for patient information storage. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GS-10 Grade Determination: Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments. Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Preferred Experience: 3 years of experience in Mammography Knowledgeable of equipment QA Functions Knowledgeable of FDA/MQSAA regulations and requirements References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-10.
