The primary function of this Pipefitter position includes the maintenance, repair, modification and operation functions of the CAVHCS, utilities and distribution systems, building service equipment, machinery and metal work.
This position is covered by AFGE bargaining unit: 1st AOC - Current permanent facility employees; 2nd AOC Current Permanent VA employees nationwide; 3rd AOC All Others
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
Installs, modifies, repairs, cleans, adjusts and maintain new and existing high pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, hot water and steam generation, radiators, steam sterilizers, heat exchangers and condensate tanks;
Repairs and replaces a variety of system components and parts to include piping, expansion joints, condensate and circulating pumps, regulators, valves, coils, diaphragms, steam filters, traps, fittings, gauges and thermostats working from blue prints, lay-out sketches and specifications;
Threads and bends pipe, assembles pipe sections and fittings, hangs or lays assemblies into position considering proper slant, slope, fall and operation of systems;
Performs standard welding operations such as spot, seam and flash, using electric resistance welding machines;
Uses manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene to join a variety of different parts or components;
Installs, modifies, repairs, fabricates parts, disassembles and reassembles equipment and maintain new and existing plumbing, supply and disposal systems and equipment;
Locate and tap main lines, ensuring proper route, placement, level and slope;
Place and connect sewage and water fixtures (i.e., hydrants, water mains, water closets, lavatories, shower, sinks fire sprinkler systems, dishwashing machines, unit gas heaters etc.);
Performs the full range of journeyman level plumbing tasks including estimating material requirements; i.e., pipe fittings and fixtures in the sizes, types, or length needed;
Installs and repairs valves and inspects and tests piping after completing the repairs, alterations or additions;
Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment which includes autoclaves, sterilizers, coffer urns, pressure cookers, steam booster, heat exchangers, dish machines, century tubs and equipment and other mechanical equipment as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (Ability to do the work of the position, Pipefitter, without more than normal supervision), which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places. The employee handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy and smelly. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. the employee is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
