The incumbent serves as a Rehab tech for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Line (PM&RS) at the VA Medical Center, Hampton VA which is a complexity 1C hospital. The position combines direct patient care activities with support functions for the Physical Therapist (PT) / Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), Occupational Therapist (OT), Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA), Kinesiotherapist (KT) and Chiropractor.

Duties

Performs a variety of clerical tasks including creating and maintaining logs, recording data, generating meeting agendas, coordinating departmental in-services, answering the telephone and other office support tasks. The incumbent responds to secure messages electronically. Schedules appointments and records cancellations in patient scheduling system, documents scheduling attempts, documents no-show appointments, and prints therapist schedules. Checks in patients and notifies providers of patient arrival. Schedules virtual visits and explains process of how to connect to virtual appointments to Veterans. Assists Veterans with troubleshooting to successfully connect to a virtual appointment. Performs consult management by dispositioning Return to Clinic (RTC) orders, discontinues consults and forwarding consults to appropriate discipline / grouper. Generates various electronic documents including but not limited to meeting agendas, monthly newsletters, emails, log sheets, standard operating procedures (SOPs), patient education handouts, memos, etc. Creates educational programs and handouts for patients with the approval of the therapy supervisor. Generates Quarterly Peer Review Forms for each therapy discipline and keeps a log of completed submissions. Updates Safety Data Sheets (SDS) books throughout the service to ensure accuracy and that certification sheets are sent to the safety office semi-annually. Assists with adding employees to Vocera system, which is a two-way communication system; receives training from Vocera contractor/representative on skills related to Vocera Ambassadorship. Orients volunteers, work study, students, and new departmental staff and trains them to the practices that they are allowed to perform (i.e. cleaning equipment, putting away laundry, running errands in the hospital, scheduling, etc.). Assists with coordination of scheduling and orienting professional students to the clinic setting, including assisting with assembling onboarding packet. Coordinates travel via telephone or electronic form and ensures receipts of documents to the travel office. Serves as alternate timekeeper and updates timecards in timekeeping system, as needed. Places documentation of safety events, falls, etc. in the electronic reporting system (JPSR). Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/06/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Candidates may advance up to two grades above lowest grade held within the past 52 weeks since last non-temporary appointment from register or direct hire. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-05 Experience: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Ability to apply a practical knowledge of therapeutic methods and techniques in order to be able to assist with treatment sessions and answer questions from patients, caregivers, etc. Ability to employ standard treatment procedures, making minor modifications as necessary, adapt various treatment activities to meet the specific needs of individual patients as well as observe, assess, and report on the progress and reactions of patients, utilizing insight and mature judgment acquired through extensive experience in administering treatment to patients. Sensitivity to changes in behavior or in the physical condition of patients, knowledge of treatment techniques and skill in motivating patients to improve participation with therapy sessions, Insight and mature judgment to observe, assess and report to therapists on the progress and reactions of patients. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment with a variety of software to type, store data and produce documents, reports, logs, charts, graphs and presentations. Knowledge of the English language including reading comprehension, medical Knowledge of the English language including reading comprehension, medical terminology (including prefixes and suffixes) and anatomy speaking, spelling and writing and specific knowledge of the medical terminology and symbols applicable to the therapy field. Language skills are such that the comprehension/production of spoken and written messages enhance therapy programs served by the incumbent. Knowledge of skill and set-up and cleaning of selected clinical equipment and devices to include the exercise equipment, bikes, treadmill, hi-lo mat tables, ultrasound, electrical stimulation units, TENS units, cervical and lumbar traction, weights, ankle weights, dowels, Graston Tools, wheelchairs, scooters, stairs, parallel bars, standing frames, etc.. Knowledge of infection control processes and universal precautions. The incumbent is required to provide appropriate methods and levels of cleaning, dusting and disinfecting to the assigned equipment in clinical treatment areas. Knowledge of VA regulations concerning patient's rights, responsibilities, and confidentiality of patient information. . OR GS-05 Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of 4 years above high school is needed to qualify. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR GS-05: Combination. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: This position requires the incumbent to perform bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing and walking on a daily basis. Incumbent must pass a physical through the Employee Health Department at this facility.
