Duties

This position starts at a salary of $36.88 (WS-12, Step 1) to $43.02 (WS-12, Step 5) with promotion potential to $43.02 (WS-12 Step 5). As an Automotive Mechanic Supervisor with Customs and Border Protection, you will be responsible for managing the Sector's Vehicle Repair Services section. This section includes multiple repair shops located throughout the Sector. Typical work assignments include: Managing and allocating budget, personnel and other resources for the Sector's Vehicle Repair Services section to ensure that CBP vehicles are properly maintained, and emergency repairs are dealt with. Establishing and prioritizing overall section plans and reviewing and approving subordinate supervisor work plans and procedures to ensure achievement of section goals. Reviewing and approving all vehicle maintenance and equipment repair contracts assigned by the Contracting Officer. Effectively communicating changing work plans, project statuses, budget estimates, and general accomplishments with higher-level managers. Ensuring section equipment and procedures are compliant with all State and Federal Safety standards and that daily safety inspections are conducted at all Sector garages and work areas.

Experience: Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.To minimally qualify for the WS-12 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Elements: Ability to supervise through subordinate supervisors. Knowledge of different relevant lines of work. Ability to plan and organize work. Knowledge of materials. Ability to meet deadline dates under pressure. Ingenuity (ability to suggest and apply new methods). To meet the Screen Out Elements, you should haveexperience performing the following duties: Managing all aspects of vehicle repair including inventory control and job orders. Coordinating vehicle maintenance, excess equipment, exchange information and resolve routine and more complex operating problems with both long- and short-range impact. Prioritizing work orders received from out-stations and departments by analyzing work schedules, manpower, and resources to determine which assignments can be performed and which must be delayed. Initiating appropriate disciplinary actions, scheduled and approves leave, conducts performance appraisals, identifies training needs. Assigning work based on number and skill of available personnel and type and availability of equipment. Ensuring that work projects are in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) policies and procedures. Failure to meet these Screen Out Elements will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Technical knowledge of both standard and special purpose vehicles and equipment; specifications, capabilities and operating characteristics. General knowledge of agency operations, activities supported by the fleet, repair and maintenance requirements, and the capability of the Vehicle Repair Services. Ability and knowledge to manage all aspects of vehicle repair including inventory control, job orders, and needs assessments. Ability and knowledge to deal effectively with all activities and when necessary, with State and local government at contractors. Ability to set up numerical charts and tables and operating an electric calculator and office automation equipment. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 08/25/2023. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
