These positions are located in Yosemite National Park, in the Division of Interpretation and Education. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 08/30/2023 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

This position will supervise the seasonal operations in Yosemite Valley during the summer months. Seasonal positions supervised will be 13-Park Ranger (I) GS-0025-05 and 5-GS-0025-07. Supervisory duties are regular and recurring and will occupy 20% of the incumbent's time. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately January through mid-November, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Major Duties include: Visitor Services and Facility Operations: Manage the operation of a visitor facility and/or information desk. Develop daily work schedules that include tours of duty and location of assignments for the supervisor's approval. Engage in and monitor visitor services provided by lower graded employees, critique these activities, and recommend improvements. Orient, educate, and inform visitors regarding access and opportunities to participate in and contribute to memorable experiences. Support an inclusive and collaborative environment. Training: Responsible for working collaboratively with a team of supervisors and under direction of the Branch Chief to develop seasonal training each year, incorporating NPS interpretive principles and Yosemite subject matter experts. Responsible for developing ongoing short trainings throughout the summer season for interpretive development, Yosemite knowledge development, and customer service technique development. Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate a broad range of interpretive programs and products conducted by fellow interpreters, critique these activities, and recommend individual or program improvements. Identify training needs; provide constructive feedback; and coach others on how to perform tasks and meet professional standards. Participate in the onboarding and the orientation of new employees, volunteers, interns, and other partners. Regularly "workshop" (collaboratively create and improve) interpretation programming and products with others. Interpretive Operations Planning: Work with Branch Chief and/or District Supervisor to create summer schedules and programming based on budget and priority direction given by the branch chief and/or District Supervisor. Make decisions in conjunction with the Branch Chief and/or District Supervisor based on changing visitor data and trends, as well as NPS interpretive priorities. Seasonal Supervision: During the spring and summer, in conjunction with the Branch Chief or District Supervisor, conduct hiring of a seasonal staff of 5-14 individuals, as well as coaching seasonal staff on accuracy, program design, and customer service, with a focus on NPS interpretive principles. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park ranger - interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. They help visitors explore the many dimensions of parks by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations. Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.

Requirements

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 08/30/2023). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Developing and presenting a wide variety of formal and informal audience and learner-centered interpretive experiences using a variety of fully developed interpretive skills, techniques, and tools delivered in-person; Develop daily work schedules that include tours of duty and location of assignments for the supervisor's approval; Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate a broad range of seasonal interpretive programs and products conducted by seasonal GS-05 and GS-07 interpreters, critique these activities, and recommend individual or program improvements; Develop/deliver in-park, off-site, and/or virtual education programs; Monitor and report the condition of park resources. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education OR a master's/equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation. Major study may include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. NOTE: Only progressive graduate education beyond the first year is credible when combining. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.
