Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately April through December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year unless funding for additional work is avaliable.

Duties

Examines museum objects, drawing from experience and practical research in selecting established treatment techniques; conducts technical research to inform treatment decisions; implements treatments and documents work with photography and written reports. Conducts work within the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute of Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). Develops project plans and cost estimates for conservation work. Provides technical advice, serves as instructor to others working with museum collections, and keeps current on preservation guidelines based on subject-area expertise. Works as a member of team within conservation to provide training and oversee conservation work on projects. Undertakes on-site collection condition surveys including creating recommendations on an item level or more generally. Create time and priority estimates for each item and summarizes results in written reports and comprehensive data. Implements preventative conservation program at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center. Maintains the conservation labs to create a safe working environment with necessary supplies and equipment.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: providing conservation treatments for museum objects with an emphasis on historic, archeological, and ethnographic items; AND conducting collection condition and general conservation surveys; AND managing the evaluation, preservation, and/or conservation of museum objects; AND carrying out technical research to develop effective treatment procedures; AND analyzing, reviewing, and making recommendations regarding preservation policy, programs, and procedures. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-9 grade level in federal service. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in art conservation with a specialty in object conservation. Education at the graduate level must have been in an accredited college or university, and such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. (A copy of your transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected). -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
