Duties

Responsible for implementing and ensuring compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act Section (NHPA) 106 process. Performs research and study on ethnography, history, and archaeology. Performs cultural inventory and assessments of major land exchange and acquisition projects. Participates in the planning and preparing of multiple-use resource management plans and environmental impact documents. Performs a variety of administrative tasks related to the program (i.e. permit review, site monitoring, project coordination) Consults externally with local tribes cultural resource specialists.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, in addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Conducting historical research; preparing reports based on research; conducting oral history interviews; conducting archaeological surveys and excavations; analyzing archaeological materials; reviewing permits, project proposals; evaluating cultural landscapes, preparing landscape designs, layout of circulation; supervision or review of landscape construction; plan long range protection and management of cultural resources; utilizing computerized systems to process, and analyze archaeological or historic data; performing field condition assessments. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you meet one of the below requirements for the series Archeologist 0193:

A. Education -
1. Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archaeology, Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa, Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development, Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques, Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND six semester hours of related course work in: 1) geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2) history, historiography, or historical archaeology; 3) environmental studies; 4) scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or 5) surveying;
ANDArchaeological field school.

2. Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum: anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies; or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A (including archaeological field school).

B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

C. Experience:
Four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project.
