This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT for VA Illiana HCS looking for Registered Nurses for Nursing service. This announcement will remain open until 12/18/2023 or until filled. The first cut-off date for referral of eligible applications is 08/25/2023. Eligible applications received after this will be referred as-needed. The Community Living Center (CLC) of the VA Illiana HCS offer long term care to residents with a variety of chronic illnesses. Additionally, residents may be offered rehabilitation, as well as temporary placement if they are unable to return to their homes. The skilled units provide care to residents with acute and chronic medical, as well as surgical diagnoses. The majority of these residents have complex needs requiring skilled nursing assessment and resident monitoring and IV infusions. The CLC also provides palliative and hospice care, offering comfort rather than cure to the residents with extensive disease that is life-limiting. The focus for end of life care is pain control, symptom management and relief of suffering. In addition, nursing staff provide spiritual and emotional support to both residents and families. Tasks are as follows, (but not limited to): Responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting and evaluating therapeutic interventions and regiments specific to long term and hospice/palliative care residents. Provides guidance and education to patients and caregivers and collaborates with other professionals at all levels, including but not limited to : Social Workers, Pharmacists, Radiology Staff, Laboratory Staff and the other Nurses and Physicians on the various clinical treatment teams. Collaborates with Community Living Center (CLC) interdisciplinary team to promote resident-centered care and provide a home like environment for long term care and hospice/palliative care residents. Identifies physiological, psychological, social and environmental variable affecting the functional status of the older adult and hospice/palliative care patient. Identifies current coping mechanisms and support systems and their effectiveness. Anticipates possible discharge needs and assists patient/significant others and multidisciplinary team in achieving goals for discharge. Documents on approved VA forms/computer programs. Plans and directs nursing care of long term and hospice/palliative care patients admitted to the Community Living Center. Plans interventions which promote health, self-determination and dignity at the end of life. Develops teaching plans based on assessment of individual needs. Provides individualized instruction or directs staff in teaching specific content/skill to adult geriatric and hospice patients/significant others. Responsible for attending in-services and continuing education activities and continued progression in knowledge and skills in long term care and palliative care. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: To perform in a fully successful manner, the individual must have the physical ability to perform the following job-related duties: light lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); pushing (no more than 30 minutes); walking (no more than 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; near vision correctable as 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; and hearing (aid permitted). Required administrative duties include the following: computer word processing/spreadsheet usage; key board typing; computer screen viewing; basic Excel and Word skills; answer/placing telephone calls; filing; note taking; and report writing. Environmentally, the individual may work alone and/or closely with others during their tour of duty. A health examination must be successfully completed prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Occupational Health Clinic policy. There will be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids.
