Employee will serve as a Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) - Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) assigned to Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Veterans Healthcare System in Lexington, KY.
Duties

The primary purpose of this position, the MAA/AOD serves in a management capacity representing medical center Director and Chief/HAS on all administrative matters occurring during other than normal tour of duty. This position is directly involved in a variety of programs specific to patient health/medical care services, eligibility, and entitlements (enrollment, admissions, bed control, beneficiary travel, decedent affairs, urgent-care, scheduling, health information management systems-databases, etc.). Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Applies specialized experience in administrative matters, medical center/healthcare organization, functions, specialties, and programs, i.e., Social Work, Nursing, Laboratory, Radiology, etc. and provides technical guidance to meet procedural, legal, and administrative requirements relating to the care and treatment of patients.
Approves and coordinates tests and procedures which cannot be done at medical center, such as referrals.
Receives and responds to non-routine patient inquiries and other administrative inquiries from patients, families, visitors, law enforcement, private hospitals/physicians, Congressional offices, etc.
Provides compassionate and sympathetic explanation of death and burial benefits to family.
Processes administrative issues surrounding beneficiary death, seriously ill cases, elopements, suicides, assaults, deaths on arrival, homicides, coding, cost recovery matters, facility/community disasters, etc.
Maintains current bed inventory; obtains bed availability for treatment needs.
Oversees the determination of patients' eligibility; obtains income and insurance information; means testing; entitlements for healthcare services; scheduling; information management systems/patient medical records, etc.
Deals with variety of individuals with tact and diplomacy; complete assigned projects, studies, narrative and statistical reports, and reviews in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner; explain and organize complex issues in writing.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Rotating Shifts (Evenings, 4:00pm - Midnight), Nights (Midnight - 8:00am), including weekends and holidays. May include Days (8:00am - 4:00pm) and some 12-hour shifts.

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes working in a medical center/hospital performing administrative duties relating to patients' health/medical care eligibility and entitlements (e.g., admissions, scheduling inpatient/outpatient services, beneficiary travel, bed availability, decedent affairs/burial benefits, etc.); applying skill using medical coding and technical terminology and various computer software programs and databases to complete administrative activities; and communicating effectively in-person and in-writing with patients, their families, administrative and clinical staff, and to prepare various reports. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires much walking throughout the medical center with occasionally being required to lift objects such as suitcases, clothing, x/rays, or medical charts. Employee must be able to deal with emergency situations and function calmly under stress in both public and private settings.
