Nebraska Western Iowa (NWI) is a tertiary care facility, and provides medical, surgical, mental health, geriatric, and rehabilitation services, including Women's Health Department and Mental Health Integration. The incumbent functions as a Program Specialist. Under the direction and supervision of the Administrative Officer and Assistant Director, the incumbent is responsible for administrative and operational duties requisite for the effective execution and operations of this service line.
Duties
Duties for this position include but are not limited to:
Leads a unit or team of employees performing work at the GS-5 level. Provides guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the work of the unit or team. Ensures the work assignments of employees in the unit or team are carried out.
Maintains a current knowledge and answers questions of other employee's procedures, policies, and directives. Trains or arranges for the training of team members in the accomplishment of tasks or projects.
Checks work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review, and reviews completed work to see that the supervisor's instruction on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards; refers questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards to the supervisor.
Resolves simple informal complaints of employees and refers others, such as formal grievances and appeals to the supervisor or an appropriate management official.
Applies administrative polices, maintains various systems, coordinates travel and other staff administrative requirements involving other VISN 23 and VHA program offices involving policies, regulations, directives, and guidelines.
Employee operates the agency telephone system to receive and connect incoming and outgoing calls. They are required to be courteous, excellent listening skills, clear and concise speech.
Employee handles Internal and professional calls courteously and efficiently. Incumbent must be able utilize to the directory resources available to them.
Incumbent will be required to handle all incoming calls of the 3333 emergency (internal 911) line. This encompasses the medical emergencies and police emergent matters.
Employee must be able to use the Engage Alert system to push out alerts over the Code phone system quickly and accurately. Incumbent must be flexible to learning the new system of Vocera that will soon be used for these alerts.
Incumbent will monitor all Engage Responder system alerts for the Code Blues and RRTs that are triggered from patient areas.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 - 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/29/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing various administrative duties, such as preparing correspondence or reports; collecting and analyzing statistical data; coordinating travel requests; and ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.

Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals.
