Located at the VA Medical Center in Wilmington, DE, this position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the Medical Center.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Transporting patients to areas throughout the medical center
Provides a range of personal care as needed to include bathing, toileting, hair and nail care, and dressing in personal clothing while maintaining privacy and dignity of inpatient/resident
Assists as needed with eating, drinking, positioning/ turning, ambulating, transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents
Maintains general cleanliness of the inpatient/resident's environment
Provides postmortem care including care of the body, collecting personal effects and transporting the deceased to the morgue
Utilizes specialized equipment such as ceiling lifters, Maxi lifters, wheelchair movers, steady and electric stretchers according to Safe Patient Handling and Movement Policy
Carries records, reports, laboratory specimens, x-rays, prosthetic equipment and patient prescriptions to designated areas, excluding control substance
Performs a range of clinical support duties, which include taking, recording vital signs and reporting deviations to the RN
Collects urine, stool, sputum and other specimens for Laboratory analysis
Observes and report changes in resident's physical condition, pain levels, and/or behavioral changes
Performs discharge bed cleaning duties due to patient inter ward transfers, deaths and discharges
Recognizes and institutes appropriate action in emergency situations such as performing CPR, Heimlich maneuver for choking, seizure precautions and safety during seizures, and emergency first aid
Uses the least restrictive method possible to deliver inpatient/resident-centered care
Establishes and promotes effective interpersonal relationships and communications with inpatients/residents, families and others
Maintains safe and sanitary environment for inpatients/residents, staff and visitors
Performs other related duties as assigned
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm; 9:00am to 5:30pm

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~
To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following:
EXPERIENCE: At least six (6) months of general experience. General experience is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area the occupation. General experience includes providing assistance in a healthcare or other patient care or personal care environment. ~OR~
EDUCATION: Successful completion of one (1) full year of education above high school level that included study in medical, health, or related fields. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Requires extensive periods of standing and walking, regular and recurring bending, lifting (not to exceed 35 pounds), reaching, carrying, stooping, stretching, and similar activities.
