The primary purpose of the work is to create audience-centered interpretive experiences that enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of National Gallery collections and exhibitions.This position serves as the Interpretive Programs Manager located in the National Gallery’s Department of Interpretation, part of the Division of Learning and Engagement, under the Office of Collections, Exhibitions, and Programs.
Duties
Responsible for managing all aspects of interpretative programs within the interpretation department.
Conceives innovative interpretive programs that enhance audience engagement with the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
Responsible for overseeing a team of staff performing a full range of supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to establishing annual work plans and performance plans, setting, and adjusting priorities, preparing schedules for completion of work, and evaluating employee performance.
Delivers gallery talks, tours, lectures, and seminars dealing with both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions according to schedules and on short notice when required.
Conducts independent research and works with curators, interpretation staff, and internal and external subject matter experts to prepare program content.
Serves as a key ambassador for the museum with VIP guests, regularly interfacing with collectors and donors as well as national and international leaders.
Cultivates new partnerships with local and national organizations to expand the reach of interpretive programs and support the museum’s audience growth and engagement goals.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1410-13. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, performing a variety of duties, with particular emphasis given to the research, production, administration, and the content of interpretive programs for an arts-based organization.

Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with cross-departmental teams.
Demonstrated experience supervising personnel, directing work, evaluating performance, training, and mentoring.
Demonstrated experience with and aptitude for teaching, public speaking, and customer relations.
Demonstrated administrative and interpersonal skills required to regularly interface with internal and external audiences and stakeholders, from the general public to patrons, donors, and other VIPs.
Ability to process and distill large amounts of complex art historical material for presentation to a general, non-specialist public as well as specialized audiences.
