About the Position: Participate in the day-to-day operation of recreation areas by checking the areas for compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, camping, noise level, sanitation and safety. This is a seasonal position. Seasonal employment is annually recurring periods of work that typically last six months each year, but this may vary. Employees are placed in a non-duty, non-pay status in the off-season and recalled to duty the following work season.

Duties

Perform visitor surveys and tabulate data. Collect user fees, maintain records of and account for funds; submit deposit. Participate in patrols of project lands and water to ensure compliance with Federal regulations. Participate in the inspection of a variety of service contracts including maintenance (mowing, pruning), refuse removal, janitorial, boundary maintenance, law enforcement, etc. Participate in activities such as fish and wildlife surveys, habitat manipulation and development, forest inventories, mapping, firefighting (prevention, suppression, controlled burning). Develop interpretive programs, conducts research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and, interviews people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event when appropriate. The duties listed are performed at the full performance level.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation ER-1130-20-550.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license (within 3 years of start).
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to acquire first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and blood-borne pathogen training.
  • During emergencies, the incumbent may be called on short notice.
  • Incumbent must receive a minimum of 24 hours of personal protection / unarmed self-defense, situational evaluation and tactical communication training within two years of employment.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-03 qualifications: Six (6) months of general experience and three (3) months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-02 level in the Federal Government. General experience is defined as experience in areas such as administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Specialized Experience includes at least one of the following: assisting in a park visitor center; maintaining informational supplies (brochures, pamphlets, etc.) at a visitor's center; providing general park information to visitors and callers; conducting routine hikes and tours of recreational areas; inspecting recreational areas for safety hazards and reporting findings to higher graded staff members. OR Successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of education, above high school, which included at least six (6) semester hours of related course work. OR Some general experience as described in A, but less than six (6) months; and/or I have some specialized experience described in A, but less than three (3) months; and I have some undergraduate education but less than the one year as described in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 9 to get a percentage of experience. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education by 30 to get a percentage of education. Add then two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify). 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. GS-04 Qualifications: Six months of general experience equivalent to the GS-03 level in the Federal Government which includes experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work as qualifying as long as the experience provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND six months of specialized experience which includes experience in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work as qualifying with specific examples such as park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. OR Successful completion of two years of education above the high school level with twelve semester hours of related course work. OPM Qualification Guide 0025 Series. OR General and/or specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some education above the high school level but less than required in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes at least two of the following: working at a park visitor center; answering visitor questions pertaining to park rules, historical information, wildlife areas and/or fire safety; patrolling recreational areas to identify safety violations or possible hazards; conducting hikes and/or guided tours of recreational areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work. OPM Qualification Guide 0025 Series. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
