The primary purpose of the position is to provide original and complex derived descriptive and subject cataloging for monographs in European languages to facilitate access to the library’s collection and to share high quality bibliographic information and descriptive metadata with the larger library community. This position is in the library's cataloging section (PL-T) in the Collections, Exhibitions, and Programs division.  

Duties

Create high-level descriptive bibliographic records to provide access to library materials through the online catalog. Apply subject analysis and appropriate classification to bibliographic records and contribute to the development of local classification system. Create new and upgrade existing name authority records. Identify opportunities to apply linked open data principles. Perform consistent assessment of metadata for accuracy, adherence to standards, quality, and opportunities for enhancement. Develop and organize catalog maintenance projects for cataloging section. Train technical support staff on cataloging procedures.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1410-11. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, performing a variety of duties, with particular emphasis given to the production and maintenance of all graphics for an arts-based organization. Ability to effectively manage sustained and productive technical review of metadata. Ability to conceive, instruct, carry out, and document metadata management and catalog maintenance projects independently or in collaboration with others. Proficiency with Library of Congress Subject Headings, the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subjects, and ability to interpret and apply local policies. Familiarity with tools and principles related to cataloging, such as linked open data, Wikidata, MARCEdit, and OpenRefine.
