This position supports the South Idaho National Parks and is located at Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. The duty station of this position has the following options: Jerome, ID; Hagerman, ID or Arco, ID. This position will support the Resources Division.

Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately Mid-late January to beginning-mid December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. This position guarantees a minimum of 20 pay periods in pay status and will not exceed 25 pay periods in pay status each year. Major Duties include but are not limited to: Plans and conducts archeological research for park planning documents, Section 110 compliance, Section 106 consultation, as well as conducts archeological field investigations, monitoring, and surveys of all types, as required to meet the needs of the park. Design, implement, and supervise multi-phased archeological projects involving documentary, archival and collections research, field investigations (both survey and excavation), laboratory analysis and professional report writing. Develop and write projects and funding requests using Project Management Information System (PMIS) to support archeological and cultural resource work. Carry out program management duties by developing work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals and/or grants to justify request and accomplish goals. Serves as Contracting Officer's Technical Representative for projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements. Coordinates research and reviews documents. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/30/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Degree: Must have obtained the education described in A through C in this paragraph: A) Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archaeology; 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. B) IN ADDITION, must have taken six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying. C) AND must have completed archaeological field school. Field school must be documented in your transcripts or resume. You must include a copy of your transcripts to qualify for the education requirement. -OR- Related Curriculum: I have a degree in a related curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated in A above, including archaeological field school. Field school must be documented in your transcripts or resume. You must include a copy of your transcripts to qualify for the education requirement. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: I have a combination of education and experience (college-level education or training) that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week in your resume. -OR- Experience: I have four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project. You must include hours worked per week in your resume. In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: conducting archeological site inventories and cataloging; photographing artifacts for curation and producing quality photographs for report publication; preparing archaeological survey and excavation reports; using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to record archaeological site and features; and conducting Section 106 inventory and monitoring projects. You must include hours worked per week on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, in archeology, anthropology, or other directly related subject matter You must provide copies of your transcript. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option. (You must include hours worked per week and a copy of your transcripts.) Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
