About the Position: The Missouri River Project minutes from the district office is located in downtown Omaha and minutes from the city's wide array of parks, museums, historic sites, restaurants, recreation and entertainment venues such as Boys Town, the world-class Henry Doorly Zoo, and the College World Series. Duties

Engineering Equipment Operation: Equipment operated includes large hydraulic excavators, heavy crawler-type tractors with dozer attachments, rotary snowplows, etc. Leads deckhands in making and breaking of tows, tying and untying lines, oil and refueling of equipment, splicing lines and handling ropes and cables. Vehicles operated include sedans, vans, pickup trucks, flat bed trucks, dump trucks, and semi-tractor/trailer truck. Vehicles operated have a gross vehicle weight up to 90,000 pounds when a lowboy trailer is used. Journeyman mechanic that implements routine and non-routine maintenance and mechanical repair for all Project mobile and non-mobile equipment, vehicles, and floating plant. Diagnoses and implements appropriate maintenance and special repairs. Journeyman welder that plans, designs, and fabricates a wide variety of projects in the repair and maintenance of all Project mobile and non-mobile equipment, vehicles, and floating plant. Performs a variety of functions to ensure proper operation of mechanical systems on floating plant to include inspections and monitoring of plumbing, sewage, mechanical, hydraulic, propulsion, electrical, and steering systems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with ER 690-1-1218, USACE Civilian Drug Free Workplace Program, dated 30 June 2021. Participation in the Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Program is required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a CLASS A, with Air Brakes, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year (twelvemonths) of occupying this position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a USCG steersman license or greater for western rivers within 1 year of occupying this position.
  • Serves as a qualified Rigger
  • Must obtain a US Army Corps of Engineers Motorboat Operator?s License upon employment.
  • Serves as an incidental motor vehicle operator. Operating an automobile or light truck to accomplish assigned duties. Employee must be physically able to operate the motor vehicle without danger to self or to others.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.

I am skilled in welding and metal fabrication, working lattice boom cranes, and operating heavy equipment (such as crawler, hydraulic excavator, front end loader, and backhoe) to excavate, trench or grade surfaces, and place rock from floating plants. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Moderate effort is expended for maintenance work but occasionally heavy effort is required to handle anchors and when assisting mechanic in major overhaul work. Coordination of hands, eyes, body, and legs is needed to work safely on wet and moving decks. While operating a motor vehicle light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate effort is required to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds, occasionally may have to handle up to 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Moderate to heavy effort is required to use the tools and equipment to cut brush and trim lines. WORKING CONDITIONS--Exposed to sun, wind, spray, rain and sleet when mooring, unmooring, anchoring or weighing anchor or coming alongside to contact other vessels. Most work is performed from a sheltered pilothouse. Exposed to possible falls on deck and the possibility of falling overboard. A life jacket is worn at all times while on deck. While driving vehicles exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, broken bones and strained back as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles, while using tools and equipment to cut brush and trim lines, and while performing maintenance duties.
