This position is located within the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Division of Clinical Services. The purpose of this position is to serve as a technical expert within the specialty area of podiatry, the Podiatrist assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients. Reports directly to Chief Podiatry.

Duties

The Surgical Staff Podiatrist (Staff Podiatrist) of the Bedford VA, Bedford MA serves the needs of America's Veterans by providing the highest quality foot and ankle care. The staff Podiatrist should be Board qualified or Board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. The individual must possess experience to perform duties as a podiatrist and surgeon, and have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general podiatric duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrist surgeons serve as consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists will perform office-based procedures only. Added work responsibilities may include being available for emergency consultations. This position is subject to a background investigation, Annual Proficiency Report, Focused Professional Proficiency Evaluation, and Bi-annual Ongoing Professional Proficiency Evaluations. Must have knowledge of age-specific competencies related to adult to older patients. Individual must be a U.S. Citizen, must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ? 7402(d), 7407(d). The Staff Podiatrist will be responsible for creating podiatry clinics at a Community Based Outreach Clinic (CBOC). Demonstrate clinical competence in providing comprehensive assessments, diagnosing and treating the diabetic foot Ability to perform office procedures on the foot consistent with board-certification and/or level of clinical expertise. Educate others in the assessment, treatment, management and evaluation of foot and ankle disorders. Capable of completing all administrative duties and record keeping including patient progress notes in a timely and professional manner. Provide care in the most cost-effective manner while ensuring that access to care is available. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
