Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Training and Development, United Stated Border Patrol Canine Academy, located in El Paso, TX.

Duties

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Training and Development will allow you to use your expertise to support the health and welfare of service canines. This position starts at a salary of $57,118.00 (GS-09, Step 1) to $74,250.00 (GS-09, Step 10) with promotion potential to $74,250.00 (GS-9 Step 10). In this Animal Health Technician position, you will become a key member of a team of homeland security professionals responsible for performing a variety of medical treatments and procedures related to the care of canines. Typical work assignments include: Preparing and administering medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian. Assisting the veterinarian during examination of canines, providing restraint as needed in order to work safely and effectively; operating x-ray equipment in conducting routine diagnostic radiographic procedures. Preparing animals for surgery, performing such tasks as shaving surgical areas and placing IV catheters; intubating trachea and administering anesthesia in the proper dosage as directed by the veterinarian, under sterile conditions; preparing various surgical instruments and equipment for use. Collecting specimens for laboratory exams and performing standardized laboratory tests such as fecal exams for internal parasites, and various blood tests; and Developing an effective service dog-breeding program, in conjunction with the attending veterinarian; identifying traits and characteristics that make a dog better able to carry out the rigorous and demanding functions of a service dog (e.g., longevity), and those that make a dog less effective in the program (e.g., medical weakness), in order to reduce the operating costs of the Canine program.

Experience: You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Assisting with the use of various veterinary laboratory equipment for examinations and administering medications. Providing advice and recommendations to medical staff/administrators on behavior and medical issues concerning various canine breeds. Using various systems in tracking data for medical records, reports and charts. Assisting with the operation of X-ray equipment in a medical setting. Education Substitution: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree in field directly related to the position i.e.; zoology, biology, chemistry, or agricultural subjects. One year of full-time graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience are also qualifying. To combine education and experience, determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Licensed Veterinary Technicians preferred. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 08/23/2023.
