Duties
If selected for this position you will serve as a senior Legal Assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services related to complex health care fraud investigations and prosecutions. The incumbent provides support in the prosecution of sophisticated health care fraud schemes targeting the Medicare and Medicaid programs, frauds committed against private insurance carriers, the unlawful distribution of opioids and other prescription narcotics, and associated crimes such as money laundering and identity theft. The work requires specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of health care fraud litigative assistance activities, knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and an ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned Assistant U.S. Attorneys. Typical duties include but are not limited to:
Provides substantive assistance to Assistant U.S. Attorney's in complex health care fraud litigative matters such as false claims for care and services by corporate and individual defendants (e.g., independent clinical laboratories, outpatient dialysis providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, medical device manufacturers, hospitals, ambulance service providers, doctors, pharmacists, and other medical providers), health care-related identity theft for fraudulent billing, money laundering, illegal recruitment of patients, kickbacks paid to care providers and unlawful distribution of opioids and other prescription narcotics.
Acts as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training, guidance, and technical assistance to other legal support staff.
Assists in conducting factual research of issues using various legal and non-legal databases and websites at the request of attorneys.
Aids in preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial.
Contributes to reports summarizing the case status including legal and factual issues, and case developments.
Furnishes requested information for pending and closed matters and cases and general procedures of the office.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
GS-8:To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must meet one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level or pay band in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: providing expert technical legal support, demonstrated knowledge of legal processes and procedures, performing difficult and complex assignments in support of trial team, providing technical guidance to other support staff, and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents. Conducting complex research in a legal area using various legal and non-legal databases and websites; knowledge of legal terminology and the litigation process, preparing a wide variety of legal documents which are voluminous and complex in format.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
