About the Position: Serves as a Park Ranger and assists higher graded staff in accomplishing day-to-day duties required to operate and maintain the recreational facility. Receives concentrated and intensive on-the-job training related to the district park resources management programs for the recreational facility to which the employee is assigned. TERM appointment not to exceed 13 months but may be extended up to 5 years. May be made permanent without further competition.

Duties

Provide welcoming assistance, instruction, and information to visitors of the Soo Locks Visitor Center and Park Grounds. Provide information in the form of talks to visitors on the area. Promote good public relations by responding courteously to inquiries concerning vessels, site and area features and history, accommodations, roads, fishing grounds, camping sites, flora and fauna, etc. Report misuse of properties or facilities, unsanitary conditions, public nuisances, etc. to supervisor and/or local police. Perform various light maintenance and custodial tasks including vacuuming, emptying trash cans, and cleaning restrooms. Perform light grounds maintenance activities such as planting shrubs, removing weeds from flower gardens, and spreading mulch, etc. Moving and cleaning benches and tables. Patrol park to remove debris, picking up litter and cleaning public features. Occasionally working as part of a crew engaged in project maintenance. Work under the general direction of a facilities operations supervisor performing duties specific to rivers associated with area Locks and Dams.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

• Required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold, rain, wind, etc)
• May be required to work weekends/holidays, first or second shift.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience Requirement: Six months of general experience which includes administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work as qualifying as long as the experience provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND six months of specialized experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skill, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized work experience include, but not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level with twelve semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
