Located within Facilities Management, Maintenance and Repair Section at the VA Medical Center in Lyons, New Jersey, this position performs journeyman level masonry work in the maintenance, repair, alternation and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block and stone. This includes several miles of roads, curbing and sidewalks

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Performs work relating to plastering, brick laying, tile setting, lath installation, wall waterproofing, cement finishing, Belgium Block, etc. Removes plaster, bricks, cinder blocks, ceramic tile, VCT tiles, etc. Lays common and face brick and cinder and cement block in constructing and repairing walls, walkways, manholes and catch basins Cuts and shapes brick, block and stone in constructing and repairing window and door openings and corners Occasionally direct the work of a helper, junior grade mason, or small groups of temporary or Purchase and Hire masons in the accomplishment of specific assignments Determines types of mortar or concrete required and prepares material in proportions and amounts required to complete each assignment Plans and lays out work, selecting the proper tools and determining materials to be used Keeps informed of new and innovative methods of masonry techniques Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position requires you to stoop, stand, kneel and lift cinder and concrete blocks and lift bags of cement and climb ladders. Frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. Continuously required to stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds. WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in damp areas; exposed to cement dust, sharp tools and falling masonry and possible falls from ladders and scaffolds. Subject to cuts and bruises. Is also exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and while handling various masonry materials. DRIVER'S LICENSE: This position requires the use of government vehicles to travel throughout VA New Jersey Healthcare System Hospitals to complete work assignments/orders, therefore, all applicants must possessa valid state-issued Driver's License. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued Driver's License. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
