Job opening: Research Physical Scientist, AST Atmospheric Measurements (Direct Hire)

Salary: $144 017 - 183 500 per year
Published at: Aug 17 2023
Employment Type: Full-time
You will lead a research team investigating aerosols, clouds and energy budget using aircraft, ground-based, and space-borne remote sensing observations. The team develops and deploys scientific instruments to gather data and publish results that improve our understanding of the climate system. You will support the current and planned NASA Earth Science Decadal Survey satellite missions.

Duties

Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Conduct studies of atmospheric aerosols, clouds and energy budget using aircraft, ground-based, and space-borne remote sensing observations as well as in situ measurements either in the context of a focused or multi-disciplinary investigation. Lead development of techniques that validate, complement, or extend remote measurements from space. Conceive field campaigns and develop proposals in response to science-driven hypotheses that address NASA focus areas. Act as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in conceiving and advocating for the investigation. Participate in and conduct field experiments and other satellite validation activities, including data analysis that examine aerosol-cloud-radiation processes, and their impact on weather and climate. Interpret results in the context of other measurements and theories. Research findings will be disseminated at professional conferences and in peer reviewed journals and other appropriate venues. Conceive and lead NASA's Earth Venture-class investigations, including airborne observations and synergies with multiple remote sensing observations that examine aerosol-cloud-radiation processes and their impact on climate. Support current and planned NASA Earth Science Decadal Survey satellite missions. Help define algorithms used to retrieve data and lead efforts to validate data via correlative measurements/interpretations. Work with a team of physical scientists and engineers in instrument definition, design, development, or characterization focusing on atmospheric and surface remote sensing and energy budget studies.

The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level conducting scientific investigations directed toward discovering, disseminating, and applying new or expanded knowledge in the study of aerosols and clouds using data from satellite, aircraft or ground-based observations as well as in situ measurements either in the context of a focused or multi-disciplinary investigation; working with a team of physical scientists and/or engineers to develop new data analysis techniques, instruments, and simulation of measurements for current and future Earth observation missions; and participating in applications for funding opportunities and publish research results in technical reports, journal articles, or requirements documents, and present them at scientific conferences and seminars. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level leading scientific investigations directed toward discovering, disseminating, and applying new or expanded knowledge in the study of aerosols and clouds using data from satellite, aircraft or ground-based observations as well as in situ measurements either in the context of a focused or multi-disciplinary investigation; leading a team of physical scientists and/or engineers to develop new data analysis techniques, instruments, and simulation of measurements for current and future Earth observation missions; leading and participating in applications for funding opportunities and publish research results in technical reports, journal articles, or requirements documents, and present them at scientific conferences and seminars. Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience. Experience statements copied from a position description, vacancy announcement or other reference material constitutes plagiarism and may result in disqualification and losing consideration for the job.
