Duties
The Optometry Technician performs duties relative to the evaluation and treatment of optometry patients seeking spectacles, contact lenses, or other visual care.
Obtains and records patient data to include an abbreviated case history, medical conditions, and medication presently prescribed.
Performs diagnostic testing/ancillary procedure duties, adhering to the specific requirements for each type of test.
Accurately measures pupillary distance and segment heights, and measures patient's face and eyes to ensure proper fit of eyeglasses.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Child Care Background is required for this position in accordance with DODI 1402.5 (e) enclosure 5; memorandum dated March 6, 1992 Subject "Criminal History Background Checks on Employees in Child Care Services".
- A pre-employment physical is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Incumbent may be required to work on a flexible schedule that may change upon short notice.
- Incumbent may be required to work with potential extended evening hours and weekend duty to support occasions when soldiers are processing for overseas deployment.
Qualifications

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting optometrist in the examination and care of patients, and operating automated systems to obtain and record patient data.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
