This position is organizationally aligned under Patient Care Services and Sterile Processing Service (SPS). Provides oversight in the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of critical and semi-critical medical devices within the RME Program.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Major Duties: Ensures new RME has been reviewed and is compatible with RME requirements before being purchased by the facility. Reviews facility databases to access documentation for RME such as SEPG, EER, CPRC and Censitrac to review all requested RME. Attend facility committees (i.e. equipment committee, etc.) to gain information on end users request for RME. Coordinate arrival of new equipment and advise using services on anticipate delivery based upon anticipated, delivery, Logistics and Biomed approvals, and required completion of RME approved SOPs, approved competencies, and ancillary purchases such as sterilization cannisters, etc. Works with Logistics and Biomed to ensure RME is not released to the end user for use until all RME requirements are met for both SPS and the end users. Develops a close relationship with infection control to discuss issues regarding RME and ensures questions are answered and communicated in a timely manner. Participates in RME tracers. Gathers any manufacturer and model-specific information related to RME through various resources including the end user, RME Interdisciplinary Task Force and Equipment Committee to ensure any manufacturer and model-specific documentation is available for review. Utilizes various resources and contacts in obtaining information from the manufacturer or vendors for development of new SOPs. SME for education of hospital staff, including the executive leadership, on all new RME to ensure compliance is met. SME and keeps up-to-date with instrument tracking systems (i.e., Censitrac). Monitors instrumentation and places dot-matrix marks on instruments as required by ITS. Conducts reviews of ITS and implements actions for compliance. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - RME Coordinator (a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6), which is defined as: Working knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings; Working knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination; Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures; Working knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation; Reading and interpret written instructions and procedures. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds in order to assess the needs of the department. 2. Ability to coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion. 3. Ability to interpret and apply sterile processing/infection prevention regulations and policies. 4. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment. 5. Ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in carrying out sterile processing functions. Preferred Experience: Experience with quality management, to include areas where reprocessing reusable medical devices occurred.
